Martial Arts Academy
The Kodenkan Dan Zan Ryu Video Series
This video series documents and catalogs the
Kodenkan Dan Zan Ryu Ju-jitsu system
founded by
Master Henry Seishiro Okazaki
during the first half of the 20th century in Hawaii.

This series was compiled for several reasons:
(1) historical documentation and preservation of the techniques so they won't be lost;
(2) to illustrate the depth and breadth of the system to people who might be interested in studying jujitsu;
(3) as a guide to progress for people who already study this style; and
(4) to lift the veil of secrecy from techniques that have never before been filmed. These DVDs show each technique clearly with exact, detailed, digital photos on the accompanying CD-ROM.

DVD 1

DVD One - The Basic Boards

The Basic Boards

Yawara, Nage No Kata, Shime No Kata, Oku No Kata

This first DVD presents the fundamentals of the system; Yawara (20 hand techniques), Nage no Kata (20 throwing techniques), Shime no Kata (25 grappling techniques), and Oku no Kata (25 combination techniques). In a rare and unique glimpse of this system as he remembers it from his days at Okazaki's Kodenkan dojo from 1936-45, Professor Ramon “Lono” Ancho, a 9th Dan (at the time of this filming, later a 10th Dan) with over 60 years of experience, narrates, explains, and guides the viewer through the techniques performed by Professor Lescak.

Length: 1 Hour and 28 Minutes

DVD 2

DVD Two - The Advanced Secret Scrolls

The Advanced, “Secret” Scrolls

Shinin no Maki, Shinyo no Maki, Shingen no Maki

In this DVD, Professor Lescak lifts the veil of secrecy from techniques that have never before been filmed and presented for public viewing. He not only presents the techniques with accompanying detailed, digital photos, but also explains advanced concepts, discusses the issue of secrecy, and gives his reasons why he has revealed these innermost teachings.
The advanced nature of the techniques is illustrated in a physical sense by the balance, coordination, timing, precision and power needed to execute them. The spirit of the scrolls is explained as a progression from the confidence gained in studying the basic boards and put to use in the advanced combination techniques of the Shinin no Maki (35 techniques); the faith based techniques designed for an instructor to protect himself and his school in the Shinyo no Maki (28 techniques); and the belief required to execute the precise point-hitting in the Shingen no Maki (25 techniques).

Length: 1 Hour and 03 Minutes

DVD 3

DVD Three - Bastard Scroll

The Bastard Scroll

Shinrai no Maki

In this disc, Professor Lescak again lifts the veil of secrecy from techniques that have never before been filmed and presented for public viewing. Thanks to modern digital technology, the images are sharp and clear with the viewer having the capabilities to stop action, reverse, and easily select a single technique. Each technique is presented: at normal speed; at about half speed with a verbal explanation; in detail with close-up footage of important points; and again at normal speed from a different angle.
Shinrai no Maki (26 techniques) is a list of intermediate to advanced techniques that Professor Lescak has adopted as a new addition and made a part of the Dan Zan Ryu jujitsu system. Since it was not a scroll originally taught by Master Okazaki, some people refer to it as “the bastard list.” Prof. Lescak explains why he has added these techniques to the system, gives some background about this list, discusses Master Okazaki’s philosophy and legacy, and shares his personal insights into the art.
